A few weeks ago, the world received shocking news that Princess Catherine was undergoing treatment for cancer. In my mind, I imagined an international hush covering the earth like a cloud, as endless speculations and the demand to know her whereabouts had permeated the social media atmosphere. Perhaps some of you, like myself, could sense growing concern for her well-being as uncertainty grew. Or, perhaps your attention was drawn to the curiosity and speculation of the solar eclipse.
If you pause and notice, you will likely identify a common theme that intertwines throughout the fabric of media coverage, and that theme is uncertainty. Most of us will likely agree that we are continuously surrounded by a cloud of uncertainty. The question is this: how do you typically respond to uncertainty? This may feel like a broad question and it is. But, I wonder if there is a theme wherein you and I trend in our own responses. Some of you may come to the conclusion that it is strictly situational; whereas others may find a greater intolerance for uncertainty. As human beings, I believe we share a common energy (a determination) to seek and find answers. We are wired to reason, to pursue, to know. And when we feel we are unable to produce a desired outcome(s) to soothe our own discomfort and satisfy our questions, our minds begin to search near and far for a probable cause perhaps built on speculation, creating a “reasonable” outcome, a satisfactory finalized answer.
But what if we can get to a place where, when answers aren’t clear or obvious, we could learn to make room for the uncertainty, and then focus our effort and attention on the things and people that matter most to us? The answer to uncertainty isn’t always more information, perhaps the answer is finding a space where we can learn to thrive and flourish even in the presence of uncertain moments. If uncertainty and the accompanying anxiety it creates have been creating challenges in your life, we’d love to help you master this anxiety so that you can experience more peace and vitality.
