As I was driving past the lakefront the other day, the rolling waves caught my attention. I began to think about how each wave is different from the other waves in appearance, in rhythm, and so forth. And then I found myself thinking about life experiences and how these waves are similar. For example, if we think of waves as experiences in life, we can note that they’re always ebbing and flowing, when we want them to and even when we don’t.
Sometimes, it can be easy to drift away from the experiences that are occurring in real-time and instead become focused on their predictably, appearance, timing, and outcome. Life can be experienced as fascinating, and life can also be experienced as overwhelming, even simultaneously. Perhaps you find yourself in a place where the rhythms and waves of life feel challenging to navigate, difficult to manage, or perhaps you’re just trying to keep your head above water.
For some of us, we spend a great deal of time trying to control and change life’s circumstances. But just as trying to change and control an actual wave will likely result in us becoming engulfed by the wave, many times our efforts to control and change uncontrollable circumstances leave us feeling overwhelmed and burned out. We experience more peace and joy in our lives when we move our focus from trying to change the unchangeable to living out our values and meaning.
