When you think of the word “resistance,” what comes to mind? Perhaps it’s an image of attempting to lift heavy weights, attempting to decline the temptation to overindulge with your favorite late-night snack, or choosing not to yell back at your boss even though you believe it is well deserved. Resistance is an interesting process and behavior. I wonder if you’ve considered how you can utilize your “resistance muscle” in a favorable manner? For example, when was the last time you recognized your mind offering a negative thought about yourself, and you chose to acknowledge it but not come into agreement with it?
Resistance isn’t to be confused with avoidance. Avoidance means attempting to do everything in your power to not acknowledge the thought. Resistance, on the other hand, means that you acknowledge the negative thought’s presence and then choose NOT to come into agreement with it. Resistance can be thought of as a muscle in the mind. The more that you practice it, the less power your negative thoughts will hold. Learning more about your thought processes and its muscle development, so to speak, can significantly benefit your relationship with yourself and how you experience the world around you.
